Knowledge in the Service of Africa!

English Department

The English Department is currently made up of eight members of staff responsible for teaching the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme of the International Baccalaureate. MYP students study English Language and Literature and Language Acquisition, while standard and higher-level English A: Literature, English A: Language and Literature and English B are taught at the Diploma level.

The English Department is tasked with ensuring the successful language development of all our students and in this vein, our subject is compulsory. We also work closely with other subjects since English is the medium of instruction in most of the subjects taught in the school. Thus, we endeavour to ensure that our students have native language proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and presenting. Additionally, the advent of the MYP and its inquiry-based learning has led to greater student engagement with the English language.

Socially, we promote the appreciation of the arts and our world through studies in various cultures, eras, and literature. Outside of lessons, we nurture creativity and create avenues for the development of artistic talent through various clubs, programmes, and competitions such as our Orator of the Year, the Drama Club, the Debate Club, Societas, among others.

In tandem with our school’s ethos, ‘Knowledge in the Service of Africa’, and to better serve our continent, the Department emphasizes clear communication in all contexts, a remit we passionately pursue.
