Knowledge in the Service of Africa!

Hostel Life

The hostel facility features 17 hostel units – 8 male and 9 female. Hostels exist in twin clusters each overseen by a Hostel Tutor and led at the student level by a Hostel Prefect. Monitors, when appointed, provide an additional layer of support. The hostels are identified by the names of rivers across the African continent. This is just another way of consolidating our pan-African identity.

Hostels vary in design depending on the period of construction. The Mano-Sassandra, Ankobra-Volta, Nile Limpopo, and Tana-Kariba hostels were the first to be built and mostly feature two-sided rooms, split by twin showers/toilets that serve each side. Each side houses two students.  These hostels also have two-sided ‘senior student’ rooms that are occupied singly on each side and share a toilet and shower. The design concept mimics huts in a village that sit in a circular arrangement, with each hostel cluster featuring a centrally located ‘palava’ hut designed to unite members. Hostel ‘tribe’ meetings are also held under these ‘palava’ huts.

Dining

The College has an open-air eating area, and the Hostels have a spacious dining hall. Meals served at SOS-HGIC are simple but nutritious and include many local foods.

Favorites include jollof rice, fufu, chapati, and waakye. Our meals are crafted by dedicated dining hall staff, but two days a year, students man the kitchens to cook traditional foods from their countries, allowing everyone to experience tastes from around the world.

Housing

Each hostel/dormitory has between four to eight rooms. The rooms have single or bunk beds, closets, shared washrooms, and study areas, and are inhabited by an average of four students. As part of the education they receive at SOS-HGIC, students are required to keep their rooms and environment clean, which includes tending to the beautiful gardens around the dormitories.

Students are divided into four hostel groups:

Spartans – Nile, Limpopo (Boys) and Juba, Congo (Girls) Vikings – Zambezi (Boys) and Tana, Kariba (Girls) Trojans – Volta, Ankobra (Boys) and Niger, Densu (Girls) Titans – Mano, Sassandra (Boys) and Turkana, Cavally (Girls)

Leisure

While we place enormous value on academics and structured extracurricular activities, our community of students are given time to relax and enjoy themselves on free nights. On these nights, popular activities include watching TV in the common rooms, playing games or just “chilling” with friends. On Saturday nights, we have entertainment, including movie night, game night, and jams. During the weekends students are free to take a dip in the pool, play sports or sleep to their hearts’ content.

Community Service

SOS-HGIC has a steadfast commitment to advancing the lives of others through community service. All students are required to engage in community service through our Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) program. Though an IB DP requirement, SOS-HGIC requires every student to join the diploma candidates in participating, as we believe CAS is instrumental in building social responsibility in our students.
