Knowledge in the Service of Africa!

Science Department

Students are engaged in regular practical work to deepen their understanding of what is learnt in class and also to equip students with skills that they need to pursue courses in the sciences at the university level. In addition to this, students regularly go on trips to familiarize themselves with what goes on in the industry and science-related companies and to better understand the links between what is learnt in school and applications of science in everyday life. The Department operates four well-equipped laboratories. One for each science subject and one general laboratory which is accessible by all three disciplines.

In the past students have visited: the Everpure water processing company, Noguchi Memorial Institute, the Ghana Standards Authority and the National Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy unit, among many others. Diploma students also embark on educational trips to the Atiwa Forest, Mole National Park to conduct Biology experiments. The school also has collaboration with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the University of Cape Coast where students go to interact with lecturers and conduct experiments.

Teachers in the science department use varied teaching and learning techniques to help students understand concepts and gain knowledge. Support lessons are organized for students who have challenges in any subject.

Whilst our students initially use standard operating procedures when undertaking practical work we put much emphasis on fostering ingenuity and developing independence. This helps our students prepare for the practical work required for the Individual Investigation and the Extended Essay. The Group 4 Project, a compulsory component of the IB Diploma programme, helps our students further develop their problem-solving, diagnostic, analytical, and teamwork skills.

The Science Department organizes Science and Technology Day which is a key event on the school calendar where students showcase their science projects.
