School Counselling

The School Counselling Department, in line with the College’s commitment to prepare students for success in all areas of their life, exists to provide caring and supportive emotional guidance for students. Students deal with a variety of challenges in school coupled with managing the various changes that adolescence brings. We know from experience and research that emotional problems can affect student learning and performance. SCD is first and foremost dedicated to:

  1. Providing an emotionally safe space for students.
  2. Helping students reach their personal and academic potential.
  3. Nurturing and developing well-rounded and emotionally stable students through the provision of professional, ethical and confidential counselling.

In order to fulfil this commitment to the students of SOS-HGIC, the SCD

  1. Provides students with individual and group sessions based on their presenting needs
  2. Runs programs to help students understand and overcome social, emotional or behavioural challenges
  3. Provides sessions to help students adopt key strategies in setting realistic academic goals and develop a plan to achieve them
  4. Develops strategies with staff and parents to help students meet their full potential
  5. Leads the PSE program, to offer student sessions such as, sexual awareness, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, relationships, stress managements, mental health, financial management and leadership skills,
  6. Offers individual and group sessions on stress and time management.
  7. Assists in the orientation programme for new students.
  8. Identifies and refers students to other health professionals in cases where help is needed beyond the scope of the Counselling department.

If and when needed the SCD refers students and parents to resources outside the school for additional support.
