Knowledge in the Service of Africa!

Message from the Principal

I am delighted to welcome you to SOS – Hermann Gmeiner International College (SOS-HGIC). You will see from our website that we are a unique school with outstanding academic credentials and a vibrant and active boarding community where students and staff enjoy positive relations through a wide range of activities.  SOS-HGIC was set up to provide a school of academic excellence for students from the SOS Children’s Villages across Africa together with students from Ghana, the host country, in a spirit of pan-Africanism and an awareness of the social needs of society.

We turned 30 in 2020 and it was a golden opportunity for us to look back on our successes and celebrate our past staff, students, and families. We also look forward to building on the legacy of the past 30 years while we embrace working in this digital and virtual age. We have high expectations of ourselves as a school and relish maintaining our reputation for excellence. Our students have very ambitious goals which they are supported to achieve through the extensive emotional, pastoral, guidance counseling sessions they receive as well as the excellent teaching and learning they have in their lessons.

We are eager to unlock the potential of all our students and focus on their progress while providing academic support and guiding them through their decision making processes. We want all our students to succeed and so we inculcate a can-do attitude and spirit in them.  Our students are encouraged to display selfless devotion to community service through our Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) programmes. An example is our learning links projects in primary schools where our students teach pupils from deprived areas how to read and write. Our students are also challenged to think about how they can care for their environment and are empowered to embark on green initiatives like the tree planting exercise launched by the class of 2021.

We are a close-knit community and being a four-year school, we have a very short time to develop our students. Yet, when the time comes for them to leave us, they exhibit mixed feelings; they are sad to leave our wonderful community, but they are also excited to go out and explore the world and make positive contributions. This is because we equip them with the skills they need to become global citizens who think critically and know how to fit into the world.

Our holistic education, combining sports, extra-curricular activities, including music, drama, and dance alongside our academic curriculum, the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP), ensures that our students are given rigorous education which prepares them for life after SOS-HGIC. We charge our students to have an international mindset as well as a pan-African outlook which makes them think about what they can do to help Africa, with inspiration from our school motto, “Knowledge in the Service of Africa”.

Alumni of SOS-HGIC have great memories of their time with us and many of them are making significant contributions to society and specifically to our school.  Through their work and what they do with non-governmental organizations in mentoring our students, providing career guidance and internship opportunities, entrepreneurship support, and partnering with us to prepare our students for the world of work, our students acquire rich and relevant experiences in a wide range of disciplines. This exposure provides useful insights to our students as they ponder their future careers. We are truly proud of our alumni, and their impact in the world and in Africa.

If you are looking for a school that will truly challenge you, leave you with a love of learning for its sake, and memorable experiences, please do not hesitate to apply to take our entrance examination – details are on our website, on the Admissions page. The process starts in January. If you get through our admissions process, we will welcome you aboard with wide open arms and guide you through what will be an amazing educational experience and you will have a second home where you will make friends for life.

Welcome aboard the SOS-HGIC ship!
