Cultural Transformation in Abu Dhabi: SOS-HGIC’s Performing Arts Exchange Program

The Abu Dhabi cultural exchange was a transformative experience for 20 students from SOS-HGIC. It marked the first-ever collaboration between SOS-HGIC, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, and Cranleigh UK, focusing on a performing arts exchange program encompassing dance, drama, music, and art.

Accompanied by our esteemed Principal, Mrs. Dadson, as well as our dedicated art teacher, Mr. Avemega, music teacher, Mr. Ankoma-Ankasa, and our public relations officer, Ms. Mguni, our students wasted no time and dove headfirst into rehearsals in their chosen disciplines. Some students gravitated toward music, others toward art, and drama and some were drawn to dance. Before the students could showcase their talents in their final performances at the Abu Dhabi Louvre (a remarkable achievement as the first school ever to perform there), they had the opportunity to explore the vibrant city of Abu Dhabi. They witnessed awe-inspiring performances in the desert and visited significant landmarks like the Abraham Family House, the Qasr Al Watan, and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

During their performances, art students created portraits on African print canvas inspired by the Louvre’s artworks, dance students integrated dances from various continents, drama students acted out different scenarios inspired by historical moments and music students performed pieces inspired by the museum’s art. A notable moment was when Nadine Gasengayire (MYP5), gracefully led the UAE national anthem. The exchange fostered cross-cultural understanding and a deep appreciation for the performing arts, leaving a lasting impact on all involved.

This cultural exchange showcased the remarkable talents and dedication of SOS-HGIC students while providing a platform for cultural exchange and artistic exploration. It demonstrated the power of collaboration in fostering a more connected and culturally enriched future for students at SOS-HGIC.
